Travel insurance: we cover cancellation costs

May 20, 2022.

Finally, the holiday we have all been waiting for is around the corner: our suitcases are packed and the anticipation is increasing with every passing minute. But even though you might have thought through even the smallest details of your trip, unfortunate accidents can put paid to your holiday. In this case, it is worth taking out travel insurance that covers your cancellation costs.

WHEN AN ACCIDENT MEANS YOU HAVE TO CANCEL YOUR TRIP

Here is an example: Marcel and his old school friend Yannick are finishing up packing their suncream and socks before closing the door to their flat and stepping into the lift. As they are loading the car to head off to the airport, they discuss the final details of their five-day trip to Barcelona. But disaster strikes when they are driving down the motorway: a lorry crashes into their car. The two friends are unharmed, but their car is a write-off. The delay causes them to miss their flight and they are unable to go on holiday.

WHAT TO DO NOW

Marcel and Yannick both took out travel insurance with Generali. After they have informed the police and a breakdown assistance service, they should inform their travel insurance about the accident when they get a moment. Their travel insurer can be contacted 24/7 before and during their trip. Generali’s travel hotline is available 24/7, 365 days a year on +41 848 800 400 400.

THESE CANCELLATION COSTS ARE COVERED BY TRAVEL INSURANCE

Cancellation costs are part of the basic modules for Generali travel insurance. If you need to cancel or postpone your trip, we will cover cancellation costs of up to CHF 50,000 for individual insurance and up to CHF 100,000 for family insurance. The most obvious reason for this could be an accident or illness (including coronavirus). The cancellation costs of activities you have booked but not been able to take up are also covered. In Marcel and Yannick’s case, we would organise and pay for the ticket for the next flight and reimburse them for the unused part of their stay.

This could include:

  • hotel stays
  • entry tickets for the football match they booked but could not attend

WHAT CANCELLATION COSTS DOES GENERALI TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER?

Estimated costs per person without Generali travel insurance

  • Ticket rebooking: CHF 100
  • Supplement for a more expensive plane ticket: CHF 150
  • Unused hotel room: CHF 100
  • Entry tickets for the football match: CHF 140

Costs covered independently: CHF 490

By contrast: the cancellation costs module costs CHF 92.20 a year for individual insurance.

With the cancellation costs basic module, Marcel and Yannick would save four times as much money, which they could use for their next trip or for other nice things.
